| Comments: | This is an interesting accounting of Peter Pond, who was unknown to me until this very moment. I wanted to point out, however, that your statement that "Pres. Thomas Jefferson read the Mackenzie book, decided USA should have a presence out there before the British got much further, and launched Lewis and Clark" was definitely a factor, but Jefferson had a predisposition to explore the Missouri River region, and had instigated three plans to do so beginning shortly following the Revolutionary War. These early plans are conveniently discussed in Ch. 6 of Stephen Ambrose's book "Undaunted Courage." This age of discovery was indeed an exciting period in the expansion of the United States.
