Comments:My father, a UEL (Loyalist) from New Brunswick always told us as children that we shared common ancestors with Peter Pond. Some the Massachusetts Bay Colony Ponds remained in New England, some moved north to Canada after the revolutionary War, and others migrated west as pioneers, explorers, adventurers etc. A restless crowd indeed, since the name Pond is not common but widespread across the continent. Peter Pond's family left Massachusetts at the same time as other families who decided that the freedoms they had sought as pilgrims were not to be realized in the original colony. A bunch of free-thinking trouble makers I guess. We are working on our family tree trying to solve the family connection of John Pond b 1750 approx in likely PA, Connecticut with ties to Abel (Able) Pond. Any hints would be much appreciated. Thanks for the website. Peter Pond was a real adventurer. It's too bad his contributions have not been better recognized. Maybe if the Ponds could stay put in one part of t

Comments:Wow! My colleague referred me to this link. She believes that I am related to Peter Pond. My father's mother (Mabel Pond) was from St. Ignatis, MI. Peter is possibly my great great grandfather? Mabel Pond married Peter Whitebird of Odanah, WI (Bad River Indian Reservation). We have a large extended family here. We don't know any relatives from the area in Michigan where the Ponds hailed from. Anymore research or anything new please, don't hesitate to contact me. Keep me posted...I am honored..

Comments:This is an interesting accounting of Peter Pond, who was unknown to me until this very moment. I wanted to point out, however, that your statement that "Pres. Thomas Jefferson read the Mackenzie book, decided USA should have a presence out there before the British got much further, and launched Lewis and Clark" was definitely a factor, but Jefferson had a predisposition to explore the Missouri River region, and had instigated three plans to do so beginning shortly following the Revolutionary War. These early plans are conveniently discussed in Ch. 6 of Stephen Ambrose's book "Undaunted Courage." This age of discovery was indeed an exciting period in the expansion of the United States. Your website is splendid!
